Bad 24 hours

Last night I went for my first ride with my new clipless pedals and was doing fine. I got about 2 miles from home and blew a flat in my rear tire. My first flat that wasn't a result of an accident. I got to the bike shop and got two new tubes and tires. My tires were the original ones and started to look a little worn after 3 years of training for 140 mile rides. I changed my first bike tire ever! It was very rewarding, after being VERY discouraging.

This morning I was going to try to meet Laveta at the BWI trail and ride with her. I was planning on riding a couple of trails in the morning and then riding to the BWI trail and back home after riding with Laveta, but several things happened that left me running very late.

I'll save the first thing that happened for the end. After getting started a little late I rode to the bike shop to just have them do a quick once over on my first bike tube/tire change. It was a beautiful day and I saw some of the entries of the infamous kinetic sculpture race on my way. I got about 2 blocks from Light Street Cycles and blew a flat in my front tire. They changed it for me and I got on my way to meet Laveta. I got about a mile away and blew another flat in my front tire. Walked back to the bike shop for another change. Derek met me and I got my car and drove off to meet Laveta. I was determined to have a good ride today!

We had a great ride. It was very sunny and warm. Laveta turned back early and I went on to Annapolis. On my way back I stopped at a deli next to Pedal Pushers, a bike shop along the trail, for some water. I started on the trail and noticed my cleat was loose and so I went back to Pedal Pushers to tighten it. I pulled off my shoe and my cleat was gone! I spent about 30 minutes looking for it and finally had to buy a used one from the bike shop. I got back to the trail and there was my first cleat in the grass. Sigh.... I got back to the car without any other problems.

Just as I was heading out the door for the start of my ride this morning I got a call from my sister. A family friend had died in a swimming accident in Peru. I couldn't believe it. Tony was only 32 and was always the sweetest guy. I can't believe he's gone. Our families have been friends for our entire lives. I don't remember meeting them, they've just always been there. So, I just wanted to take this time to remember him. And to let his family know that he was well loved and will be missed.
