30 days of World Music

Angelique Kidjo was great but it was time to celebrate my people. So Derek and I went to see Peru Negro. They are the "Ambassadors of Black Peru". Song, dance and great music. Follow the link to their site for a video clip of them. I love "Musica Negra" and even took some dance lessons on a trip to my grandparents outside of Lima. Chabuca Ursia was my instructor. A wonderful and patient teacher for this American born child of Peruvian immigrants. 13 years old and alone for a month with distant family who all speak Spanish. What a great experience.

Peru Negro travels around the country every winter so check them out, buy an album and get a glimpse into the music and dance of Afro-Peruvians, and remember Eva Ayllon is also on tour. She is another great performer of "Musica Negra". Woo hoo! What a great month!

Here's Derek in the lobby of University of Maryland Ina and Jack Kay Theatre before the show.
